Congress OKs historic bailout bill; Bush signs it

WASHINGTON - With the economy on the brink and elections looming, Congress approved an unprecedented $700 billion government bailout of the battered financial industry on Friday and sent it to President Bush who quickly signed it.
"We have acted boldly to help prevent the crisis on Wall Street from becoming a crisis in communities across our country," Bush said shortly after the vote, although he conceded, "our economy continues to face serious challenges."
Underscoring that somber warning, the Dow Jones industrials, up more than 200 points at the time of the House vote, had fallen into negative territory an hour later. They fluctuated as the afternoon wore on.

time a Democrat says they are for the little guy, or criticize Republicans for only helping corporations this deal should be tossed right back in their face. This just shows the hypocrisy that runs rampant in Washington and the insanity of election year.
And the next time someone says the Democrats aren't business-friendly, "this deal should be tossed right back in their face". And the next time someone says the Republicans don't like pork and are fiscally responsible.....never mind--no one says that anymore.
People like Pink Slip
The next time some Democrat whines about making "every vote count" or accuses anyone of being "disenfranchised", remind them that every vote counts except if you are a Democrat living in Michigan or Florda and voting in the Democratic primary.
...that chose to flout the rules of the Democratic Party (about having the primary so early). The legislature could have kept things as they were (and really affected the outcome). Instead, they wanted to have their say early in the primary season. Of course, we could start having the primaries for the next election right after this general election. Or we could have open elections, and hope that some person (out of hundreds of candidates) doesn't win the general election with 5% of the electorate. Then again, one guy with a .30-06 is worth 60 million votes anytime.
"Seeking to give Californians a voice in choosing the next U.S. presidential candidates, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law on Thursday a bill to move the presidential primary election in the nation's most populous state to February 2008.
"Moving up the primary from June to February gives California the influence it deserves in choosing the next presidential candidates," Schwarzenegger said at a news conference to commemorate the bill's signing."

And the California primary results DID count.
Remember Hillary won.

...you might find that California held their primary on "Super Tuesday",

The Democratic Party's prohibition applied to those states (such as Florida and Michigan) who tried to move their primaries to before that date (in Michigan's case to January 15th). Unfortunately for the Michigan Democratic Party their Republican counterparts decided to screw the electorate with these efforts, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_Democratic_primary,_2008. So much for Republicans being "above" politics.
What a spinless bunch of wussies.
According to you, the Republicans forced the Michigan Primary up.
And the National DNC leadership LET THEM? The National DNC leadership just let the Republican minority in the State house RUN OVER THEM?
The National DNC leadership was out manuvered by Republicans. HAHAHAHA!
Now seriously, the person behind the Mich Primary move was a Democrat. Please notice the part I highlighted in bold letters. The part about Debbie Dingell. You know the name Dingell? As in the wife of Democrat Congressman John Dingell? You would think that Democrat Congressman Jon Dingells wife would do what the national DNC chair wanted,.

"Michigan legislators passed a bill to move the state primaries date to January 15 in an effort to increase the state's influence in the presidential candidate nominating process. They argued that the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary unfairly dominated the selection process.[5] Just as in Florida, the move-up bill originated in a Republican-controlled Senate and passed by a 21-to-17 straight party-line vote — with every Democrat casting a no vote.[6]
However, Democratic National Committeewoman Debbie Dingell was a leader in moving Michigan's primary date to January 15. She later explained that she believed Michigan's rebellion against the DNC rules would spark a national campaign to change the primary process, so that Iowa and New Hampshire would not always be first. She also claimed that if Michigan had conformed to DNC rules and held its primary in February, the Democratic candidates would have virtually skipped Michigan anyway, in favor of other crucial states.[7]
Federal Democratic Party rules prohibit any state, except for Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, from holding its primary before February 5. On December 1, 2007, the Democratic National Committee stripped Michigan and Florida of all of their delegates to the national convention. Michigan would normally send 156 delegates.[8]"
...were the ones who caused the bill to pass. The DNC Committeewoman Dingell (who rebelled against the DNC rules) was a leader but had no vote. That was done by Republicans who saw that it might be advantageous to their party if Michigan could not participate in the process of selecting a candidate for the opposing party. Rather like Rush trying to get Republicans to participate in voting in Democratic primaries. I don't know who would have been the Democratic candidate without this interference. I think at this point it seems certain that Obama will be President (the Republican Party can thank their "trickle up" economic plan for that).
I hope myself that McCain wins. I want a Republican in the White House when the other shoe falls. That party deserves all the disgust of the electorate when the economy goes in the shitter. I think 2012 is soon enough for a Democratic President. When I see McCain I think "Hoover".
