Feds allocate 3.87 mil in job training for SW Ohio

Southwestern Ohio will get $3.87 million in federal money to help with
job training as shipping company DHL proceeds with plans to close its
Wilmington facility, according to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Brown,
D-Ohio, said the government would provide an emergency grant that will
help pay for job training for about 8,000 workers expected to lose
their jobs.

Deutsche Post AG, the corporate parent of DHL, has said it will end its U.S. domestic deliveries by Jan. 30.

DHL
plans to hire United Parcel Service to replace ABX Air and ASTAR Air
Cargo, which now transport DHL packages by air. That will transfer much
of the work done at the Wilmington air park to a UPS facility in Ky.

Nice gesture - futile gesture perhaps, given that there's no jobs available. They can train people, but are there jobs to get?

I always wondered about government sponsored job-training dollars and how they are used. If I lose my job at DHL, would I get money to go back to school to get dental-assistant's training? Doesn't seem right...if I lose my job, I should have the motivation to apply to school, secure part-time funding, secure loans and already existing grants, and do this on my own.

Maybe the job-training is for certificate-progrmas, like HVAC? Maybe it is just securing GED or other portable skills from somewhere like The Source? I don't know...that's why I am asking.

I wonder what the success rates are? ...how many people move into another line of work because of this sort of training.

The money used for this may be better allocated to a loan program for business start ups which would create jobs.
