What to do about the strays?

Humane Ohio is a low-cost spay/neuter clinic available to the entire Toledo area. While regular prices are $45 for cats and $25 for strays, current rates for East Toledo are only $25 for cats and free for strays - this is to address the overwhelming cat population in that area. If you cannot provide transportation or simply do not have the time, you can schedule an East Toledo specific appointment and transportation will be provided for your cat. How this works is a van is stationed at the East Toledo Family Center (on Varland) on specific dates that will transport your cat to Humane Ohio and drop them off the following day. Please call first to schedule your appointment: 419-266-5607. For more information and a list of available vaccinations at discounted rates, please check their website: http://www.humaneohio.org/
There are many health benefits for your cat or dog by having them spayed or neutered - including: females have a lower risk of breast cancer and uterine infections and males have a lower risk of prostate diseases and no risk of testicular disease. Also, neutered male will not develop sexual aggression and both males and females will be far less likely to mark their territory. Having your pets (and strays) fixed will help to cut down on the millions of dogs and cats that are euthanized in shelters every year. Cats can breed as early as 4 months, and with an average litter of four kittens that's 36 more kittens in 14 months, many of which are taken to shelters and over 70% of those taken to shelters are euthanized.
So what to do about the strays? There are approximately 82 million stray cats in this country alone and the most effective and humane method is to trap-neuter-release. This is done by setting a live-trap, having the stray fixed, and then releasing them back into their colony. For information on how to trap-neuter-release strays please refer here: http://www.alleycat.org - you have the option to research it yourself or ask a local Feral Friend for help and information.
