A Columbus-area man charged with making a death threat against Ohio's top elections official is being held in lieu of $1 million bail in hopes that he remains in custody for a psychiatric evaluation.
"There's a question of safety, whether it was an ill-advised temper tantrum or if he was really someone (wanting) to carry out a threat," said Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien, who requested that the bail be set at $1 million.
Dana McArtor, 51, of 687 Riviera Court in Hamilton Township, was arrested Friday and charged with intimidation.
The State Highway Patrol says that McArtor threatened to assassinate Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner or her family in an Oct. 17 cell-phone call to her office.
McArtor remained in the Franklin County jail after Municipal Judge David Tyack set his bail in an initial appearance yesterday.
Authorities traced the threatening call to McArtor's phone, Assistant Prosecutor Lindsay Broderick said. McArtor first told Highway Patrol investigators that he hadn't made the call, then remembered that he had, Broderick said. (cont.)
